1. Are fuel air batteries practical?

In the field of batteries, apart from the familiar lithium-ion batteries, such as 3C lithium batteries and lithium power batteries (including lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganese acid and lithium ternary batteries), there is also a special type of battery - metal fuel cells, such as aluminium air batteries, magnesium air batteries, zinc air batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, etc.

The working principle of the metal air cell is that the metal is used as the positive material, i.e. the fuel, and through a liquid medium (river water, fruit juice, etc.) it reacts with oxygen in a redox reaction to produce electricity. In the event of a power shortage, the metal fuel cell is the main solution for emergency back-up power due to its superior storage capacity. This article takes the aluminium air battery as an example.

2. What is the problem with Aluminium air battery?

In the process of using aluminium air batteries, the size, performance and material system of the battery can be an important factor in the generation of electricity, depending on the application scenario.

1. Space. In the case of high power aluminium air batteries, for example, the reaction between the aluminium plates and the electrolyte requires space, which makes it necessary to have a large battery to meet the actual demand for electricity.

2. Battery condition during power generation. The reaction of the aluminium plate takes time, so in some scenarios where instantaneous discharge is required, such as various types of starter power, the aluminium air battery is currently unable to meet; at the same time, as the chemical reaction occurs through the liquid medium to generate electricity, this requires the entire aluminium air battery to be in a smooth running state, which will affect the battery's power supply effect under conditions such as bumps.

3. Corrosion. Although the storage time of unused aluminium air batteries is very long, there will be a certain amount of self-reaction in used batteries. This requires the user to pour out the electrolyte when the battery is not in use and to keep the battery dry to prevent self-corrosion from occurring.

4. Repeated use. This is an issue of concern to many users, whether it can be used repeatedly in the form of charging and discharging like lithium batteries. In fact, for aluminium air or metal fuel cells, the main consumable is the metal plate. When the metal plate is consumed, the aluminium air cell will not be usable, and if it is replaced with a new metal plate, it will become a brand new power generator again.
